Term 1 2023 Highlights

It is hard to believe that Term 1 is over already, however it has been very busy and productive. We have completed our first cycle of teaching, learning, and assessing and look forward to meeting with parents in week 2 next term to set academic goals for the rest of the year.

Please enjoy this look-back at the Term 1 Events.

Interm Swimming

The school year started with a bang (or a splash) with our Year 3-6 students participating in swimming lessons at Bilgoman. The weather was perfect, and our students were fantastically behaved at the pool.

Spelling Bee

Congratulations to Remi G (who was the Senior Runner-Up) and Blaise S who earned us the Spelling Bee Senior trophy for their amazing spelling prowess. Also well-done to Layla B and Olivia M who did an awesome job as well.

Bickley Leadership Day

On Friday March 17, the Year 6’s from Room 13 attended Bickley Leadership Day.  Along with Ms. Taylor and Mr. Paulin, the students had a fantastic day building rafts and canoeing.  The students enjoyed racing their team-mates up and down the reservoir and playing team games.  The students also faced their fears on the vertical challenge by climbing a range of very high ropes, poles and ladders.  The students were given many opportunities to show their leadership, safety and collaborative learning skills.  A fun but tiring day was had by all!

Caversham Wildlife Park

Rooms 3, 4, 5 visited the wildlife at Caversham Park and had a great day learning lots about Australian animals and birds. Thank-you to the parent helpers who attended on the day.

Puppet Show – Camp Quality

The puppet show from Camp Quality visited to raise awareness about childhood cancer with 2 fun, interactive shows presented to our juniors first and then our seniors.

Docker’s Shield

Our Year 5 and 6 boys participated in the Docker’s Shield, playing footy against approximately 10 other teams at Jubilee Reserve in Bassendean. The boys played really well and had a great day representing our school.

Student Council to Parliament House

Our Student Council were lucky enough to be invited to State Parliament by our local MLA, Mr Matthew Hughes. We shared lunch and then were privileged to sit in the chamber during question time

Harmony Day

To celebrate Harmony Day this year, we wore orange and students participated in some classroom and Japanese activities. The juniors had fun dancing and it was great to see traditional costumes being worn showing our diverse heritage.

Recycling and Sustainability Programmes

The Sustainability programme has really hit its straps this term with the battery and oral care recycling our focus. The winners each week win a platter of fresh fruit donated by Woolworths and prepared by Mrs Boyd.

The Parky Rangers, our student eco-warriors, accepted an award from the EMRC for coming second in our division for battery collection weight last year.

NAPLAN

Our Year 3 and 5 students participated in NAPLAN this term. Traditionally, NAPLAN has been conducted in Term 2, however, to assist schools with earlier data provision, it has been brought forward for the first time this year. Our students participated with no issues and showed calmness and a willingness to try their best.

On-Entry

All our Pre-Primary, Year 1 and Year 2 students participated in the On-Entry testing in the first half of the term. This data assists us to identify students’ and cohort strengths and weaknesses and aids in planning and development of programmes.

New School Board

Our School Board is elected for the next three years with Marin Shurlock elected as the Chair. Please see our website soon for a comprehensive synopsis of your parent representatives.

New P&C

The P&C filled all their vacant positions and has been very proactive in identifying potential fundraisers and managing the canteen. They have published a newsletter and an introduction to who they are on SZapp.
